Default Playing in two's - what works ?

Hey,

I'm very new to guild wars but my girlfriend and I have been looking into new games to play and saw that guild wars was looking like a very attractive choice, we have been researching for a little while now and I have been reading on these forums a lot and we are both very much looking forward to starting !

Now the question I have as a completely new player to the game but a "veteran" to the mmo scene (been playing mmos for over 6 years now) and after reading up on a lot of the classes and the class combos.

Would it be viable for us to play duo necromancers, and then I'm talking we are gonna start by only buying the original pack and then move on to factions and nightfall.

What would you guys reccomend for a pretty much purely pve duo of 1 necromancer and 1 other class and what should be pick as our secondery classes ?

I'm only asking for guidelines here since we haven't started the game and we are both very interested in the necro class but I'm also willing to try out other classes if it has better synergy by far.

So what would you guys reccomend for us

Thanks in advance !

suuure. two necros with 3 necro heroes would make a pretty solid discord team.
and for builds see http://pvx.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Warrior and Necromancer go pretty well together. The Necromancer is a class that has the ability to open up the defenses and weaken the opposing team. While the necromancer has the potential to deal the most amount of damage in PvE ( of all the classes), a human warrior would definitely complement the necro.

2 Necromancers work well together too.

First off, Welcome!

Secondly, play what you want to play - this is a game, it's something you do to enjoy. Try out 2 Necromancers if you are both interested in them, have FUN.

Lastly, 2 Necros will work fine together, whether you are running your own builds, or are using some of the builds that the community has put together. 2 of the most-used team builds revolve around 3 Necro backlines - Sabway and Discordway.

Necromancers are just amazing in general. They really are a blast to play, and complement just about any team.

Hope you two enjoy!

1. If you're going chapter-by-chapter, anything you choose is going to be so suboptimal for such a long time that there's almost no point in asking for advice. It's like asking motorcyclist enthusiasts to help you choose which bicycle to buy. Not that there aren't things you can learn here -- there are. It's just that most of the discussion and interest is over how people with access to all the skills can best handle the game's challenging areas. You'd be best served to set about learning WHY what works in the hard areas works, then generalize and adapt the lessons to the challenges you have at hand with the skills you have available.

2. In the long term, Necro/Assassin + Warrior/X is a very strong combo. It'll even perform OK in the short term too.

3. Ignore the wiki builds posted here. By the time you'd be able to run them, you would also be able to run better things with a human necro in the party.

4. Later in the game you gain the ability to change secondary professions freely. Your initial choice is not super important.

Most of the builds that ppl have offered you are not relevant if you start only with prophecies, but that's ok. just use whatever you learn along the way.
Because necros have 3 different lines (blood, death and curses), you can play 2 necros, using 2 different roles. It is true that the blood line is considered inferior to the other two, but that is not true for the early stages of the game.
secondary prof. can be changed later, I would choose at least 1 monk secondary if I were you.

As my main character is a Necro Id definitely say Necro is a great class to play and can partner up with just about any other class to compliment them or have them compliment yourself as a Necro.

However, realistically Id advise you to go for whatever class suits your style of play the best. You said you have played MMOs already. maybe you could say what type of classes you enjoyed the most and we could recommend a class for GW. That said. In Guild Wars you can make and run multiple characters on one account and they would all be in the same guild unlike WoW for example, so there is absolutely no disadvantage to making multiple characters and trying which ever suits you the best.

As to the game you buy. You might want to look into the new complete edition which already has all 3 Campaigns and the expansion integrated, so you will only have to buy it once and its a lot cheaper than buying each game separately (Especially if you need to do that for yourself and for your friend). Each time you create a new character Guild Wars asks you which campaign you want to start from.

Thanks a lot for the great advice everyone, we really appreciate them

we decited to go duo necro's and not do too much research like reccomended by someone here the games are always more fun if you go into them without knowing anything, figgured we'd start off with the original game as I saw that was reccomended in another thread.

Gonna start out as necro/mesmer and necro/monk but then like someone said here if its possible to change proffesions freely after that the original choice doesn't matter that much.

Thank you all again ! we will be starting tonight )

You can change your secondary profession freely (in towns and outposts) later in the game, never your primary.

If you have all the games and want a great two man party then i would suggest one Necromancer and one Paragon.

The necromancer is one of the most versatile classes in the game, I would suggest that you read Moloch Vein's outstanding guide in the stickys.

The Paragon, as you progress through the games, will not only be a very nice compliment to a Necromancer it is one of the strongest classes in the game as well.

1. Don't try too many things too quickly. If you try to develop your character too fast, you will miss challenges and the storyline will lose its appeal.

1b. Exception (only if you start with default campaign, i.e. Prophecies): Once you get to Lion's Arch, purchase Factions and visit Kaineng City Center to obtain armors. These armors will save you a lot of grief later as in default campaign storyline they are obtainable near the end of the campaign. Oh, and Guild Wars armor system ensures that you won't be a superman no matter the armor quality you have.

2. Necromancer... for starters, try a simple minion master or a simple curses build. Remember that [Tab] key is your friend, and that pressing [Ctrl] and [Alt] will show you closest targets.

3. Do not hesitate to ask for help or consultation. Some missions are overwhelmingly difficult if a crucial piece of information is missed.
If you need spoilers, wiki is your friend.

4. If you want the game to become easier:
- get heroes (buy Nightfall and pay a brief visit from Lion's Arch)

But above all - don't rush. The real flavor of this game (PvE) is lost when you try to do too much too fast.

Regards,
Ruemere

Just keep in mind that while multiple necroes is good, multiple minion masters isn't. You'll just be limiting each other's supply of fresh corpses. If the N/Mo goes minion master and the N/Me goes mass hexes, you'd probably make a good team.

For the love of god stop promoting N/me builds.

For PvE there can be no better mass hexer than a N/a.

He said he wanted to go N/Mo + N/Me, so I recommend something I think would be alright for N/Mo + N/Me. Makes sense, right?

EDIT: Also, they only have Prophecies. N/A in Prophecies is not possible.
